Jim Folger, Owner, and Founder of One Source Technical, Inc., talked about networking tactics and technologies to use when conducting your job search.
He said to make networking work for you; three things are needed:
- A list of target companies
- The name, email, and phone number of the hiring manager at each company and
- A method for marketing yourself.
Data Mining: Getting Your List
Jim suggested all job seekers start with data axle reference solutions (formally Reference USA). It is free with a Hudson (and other NEO locations) Library card.
Enter the following data:
- SIC Code (You find the SIC Code, using the first two numbers of the type of companies you want to target)
- The geography you want to work
- # of Employees
- Sales Volume
- Credit Rating
And you should come up with 90-100 leads!
LinkedIn: To Find the Hiring Manager
Do a LinkedIn search but make sure you are logged out of LinkedIn or an incognito search on Google Chrome.
On the Google search bar, type in the following Boolean search:
Manager OR Director OR VP Design Cleveland Swagelok – jobs site: LinkedIn.com
From this search, you should get a listing of possible hiring managers at the company. (Obviously, you replace Cleveland with your city of choice and Swagelok with your target company)
Please do NOT send them a Linkedin message; instead, send them an email. How do you find their email address if you are not connected?
Finding Email Addresses
Jim highly recommends using hunter or mailtester.com, where you can do some email searches for free. In both programs, you need to create an account to go any further. However, you should be able to obtain a valid email that you can try!
He said you should send a short email followed up almost immediately with a telephone call. The email will look something like this:
SUBJECT: Interest in (Company Name) OR Interest in (Job Title)
Then write a short message that demonstrates synergy with the hiring manager and interest in the company. Suggest an intro phone call.
Who do you send the email to? The hiring manager, HR manager, Talent manager, or Director.
Send out as many emails as you can each day.
Final Thoughts
When doing all these things, your main objective should be to get an introductory phone call to ask for referrals about other people you should network with.
“Job seeking is truly is a numbers game, and you should set out with a goal each day to connect with as many people as you possibly can!” — Jim Folger
